Filter Press Introduction
A filter press is a mechanical device used for solid - liquid separation, particularly for separating solids from slurries or suspensions. It consists of a series of filter plates that are usually arranged in a frame and can be pressed together to form a filtration chamber.
Filter press consist of frame, filter plate, pressing system and electric control cabinet. Frame consist of base, push plate and girder and supports the pressing device and filter plate. Filter plates are installed on girder between tail plate and push plate, with filter cloth sandwiched in them. In operation, the pressing device drives the push plate to press the filter plates and filter cloth between push plate and tail plate. The function of electric control cabinet is to control the process of the sludge dewatering, such as set the dewatering time, the pump pressure, the treating capacity, and so on.
Filter Press Fabricate Process
- Filling the Chamber
- The slurry or suspension to be filtered is pumped into the spaces between the filter plates through an inlet port. As the slurry enters the chamber, it begins to distribute evenly across the surface of the filter media (usually filter cloths attached to the plates).
- For example, in a mining application, the ore slurry is pumped into the filter press chamber. The slurry contains valuable minerals and a large amount of liquid (usually water).
- Filtration Process
- Under pressure, the liquid part of the slurry passes through the filter media, leaving the solid particles behind. The pressure can be applied mechanically through a hydraulic or screw - driven system that squeezes the plates together. The filtrate (the liquid that has passed through the filter) is collected through an outlet and can be further processed or disposed of.
- In a wastewater treatment plant, the sludge - water mixture is filtered. The clean water passes through the filter cloths and is collected as filtrate, while the sludge is retained between the plates.
- Cake Discharge
- Once the filtration is complete and a solid cake of the separated solids has formed between the plates, the pressure is released, and the plates are separated. The solid cake then drops or is removed from the plates. Some filter presses have automated systems for cake discharge, such as plate - shifter mechanisms or vibration systems to ensure efficient removal of the cake.
